DOOR TO DOOR DOG REGISTRATION CHECKS IN KENTISH

It has been some time since Council last conducted door to door dog registration checks throughout the whole Kentish Municipality.  Commencing 1 September 2019 our Animal Control Officers will be knocking on your front door, and then checking around your property for any dogs.  Properties in town and rural areas will be checked.  Our officers will carry an identification card so that you know they are authorized by Council to enter your property.

Section 72 (1) of the Dog Control Act 2000 allows our authorised Animal Control Officers to enter and remain on any premises at any reasonable time to determine –

(a)     the number of dogs on those premises; and

(b)    whether or not any dog on those premises is registered; and

(c)     any other relevant matter relating to any licence.

Section 72(2) of the Dog Control Act 2000 states that our authorised Animal Control Officers may require the occupier of the premises to produce for inspection –

(a)    all dogs of which the occupier is the owner; and

(b)    any other dogs kept on those premises; and

(c)     evidence of the registration of dogs kept on those premises.

Section 79 of the Dog Control Act 2000 states that a person must not obstruct, hinder, delay, impede or threaten an authorized person in performing any function or exercising any power under this Act.  The penalty for this offence is $336.

ALL dogs over the age of 6 months must be registered.  This includes all hunting dogs, working dogs and guide dogs etc.  Guide dogs & hearing assistance dogs are exempt from registration fees but they must still be registered. If you have more than two dogs over the age of six months or more than four working dogs over the age of six months you also require a kennel licence.

The most important reason for registering your dog is so we can return them to you if they escape from your property.  Registration fees help Council to provide services including operating a pound, responding to dog attacks, dog patrol services to reduce stray dogs on streets and in public places and reuniting lost or injured dogs with their owners.

The penalty for keeping a dog that is over 6 months old and not registered is $168.

If your dog is not currently registered please call into a Service Tasmania Shop or the Council Office at 69 High Street, Sheffield now.
